Colorful Dandelions

One of the best things about being a mom of young kids during summer is the handpicked wildflowers that the kids always bring to me. They see something others would consider a weed and think it’s beautiful and worthy enough to be a gift for mommy. There is something inherently precious about that. For that reason I wanted to make this next craft, a simple multistep process to create everlasting dandelion flowers. Since you are making them you can use any color, but in this house, we embrace the rainbow, ha! I’d like to also point out that this was Boose’s first time with being the photographer, and she did a great job. If some of the pictures are a tad blurry, I hope you’ll understand a 5 year old was controlling the camera.

You will need:

* Yarn

* Fork

* Pipe Cleaner

* Thread and Needle

* Scissors

Step One:

Wrap a large amount of yarn around a fork, bigger “blooms” will require a bigger fork.

Step Two:

Once you have a large amount wrapped around, use the thread to tie a knot, bunching it together as pictured below.

Step Three:

Put the pipe cleaner through and create the stem. Use the wire to help pinch the pompom together further.

Step Four:

Cut through the loops to create a crazy looking pompom.

Step Five:

About 1/4” to 1/2” (depending on the size of your bloom) wrap thread around the base to make the flower less crazy looking and more dandelion-y. At this point you can snip and trim the yarn for a more even look.

Step Six (optional):

Using a recycled toilet paper tube and some colored paper, create a vase to hold your new forever flowers. This was completely Boose’s idea, and now my flowers are proudly in their vase on my desk.

Final Verdict? I love my dandelions, and Boose wants to make more because it’s a special way to keep flowers (her favorite) forever.

Kid Friendly? Yes, and no, adults may need to tie off the pompom and cut through the loops.

TRieD! And Succeeded
