Salt Dough Keepsakes
I’ve read about how easy salt dough was to make and to use as keepsakes, ornaments, garden décor, and more. So, I thought in order to wrap up August and the kids crafts month that a salt dough keepsake craft was in order. If you can’t tell by my posts, I’m sentimental. Right now I have a large box under my desk housing all the items the kids made at school. These salt dough items are just going to add to that pile of sentimentality, but ended up very cute and is definitely something I’ll consider around Christmas time for tree ornaments!
You will need:
* 2 Cups Flour
* 1 Cup Salt
* Up to 1 Cup Water (pour in gradually until you get a dough consistency, I did not use the entire cup)
* Cutters or a rolling pin
* Cookie sheet
* Preheated over 200 degrees.
Step One:
Mix together the ingredients in a large bowl. The dough is sticky, but your hands are your best utensils here.
Step Two:
Once the dough gets to the consistency of play dough, then you can begin creating your shapes. Ours are lumpy because we didn’t use a rolling pin, feel free to use something to make them smoother.
Step Three:
Once you’ve created your shapes, put them on a cookie sheet and place in the oven at 200 degrees for 3 hours (larger shapes will need longer)
Step Four:
Once out of the oven let cool. Then go ahead and paint and design them however you want. If you poked holes in any of them, you can now add string and let them hang up wherever you desire—enjoy!
Final Verdict? This recipe made way too much and I’ll probably 1/2 it next time, but they came out nice with pretty minimal effort, which is perfect for young kids!
Kid Friendly? Yes, they both loved getting their hands “dirty” mixing the dough, creating their shapes, and hand prints. Adult supervision required for the oven portion of course.
